A number of valuable collections of Hanley material are available both in the UK
and the United States. Amongst the most important are :
- Liverpool City Library This contains a large number of letters to James Hanley, notably a major collection from John Cowper Powys, as well as small collections from T E Lawrence, E M Forster and Storm Jameson. The library also has a selection of press cuttings and a number of Hanley's books.
- National Library of Wales The library contains a good selection of Hanley books, and a very important collections of manuscripts and letters.
- University of London The Sterling Library holds a small but important collection of Hanley books, letters and manuscripts, including one of the few available UK copies of the early novel Resurrexit Dominus.
- The Powys Society Collection This collection at the Dorset County Museum holds a number of inscribed books from Hanley to various members of the Powys family, together with a small number of letters and other manuscripts.
A number of important collections are also held in the United States. These include :
Bryn Mawr College The American collector Frank Harrington has recently bequeathed his unrivalled Hanley collection of books, letters and manuscripts to the college, including almost the full correspondence between Hanley and Harrington from the 1970's until Hanley's death in 1985.
Temple University, Philadelphia holds an important collection of Hanley BBC Radio and TV scripts, together with all the later letters from John Cowper Powys to Hanley.
University of New York at Buffalo also holds a good collection of Hanley material, including copies of all the later letters between Hanley and Harrington not at Bryn Mawr.
University of Northern Illinois Maintains an important collection of Hanley books and manuscripts, together with a large number of letters from Hanley.
University of Texas at Austin The Harry Ransom Research Centre holds a large collection of Hanley letters and manuscripts, together with an important collection of material relating to the Powys Brothers.
